Get started at UOW with the skills to succeed
Skill Sessions help you build the essential skills and knowledge to feel confident starting at university. Each week focuses on practical topics you can use immediately in your studies and student life.
What to expect:
- Expert-Led Weekly Sessions: Engage directly with UOW staff and key support teams who provide guidance and practical insights.
- Practical Skills for Academic Success: Develop effective study strategies, time management techniques, and a clear understanding of academic expectations.
- Guidance for Living and Studying in Australia: Receive structured advice designed to support your transition to university life and the broader Australian context.

Skill Sessions run weekly throughout session (not including mid-session recess, study recess, or exam weeks).

- Sessions in Week 6 and 11 are delivered at a different day, time and/or location with separate registrations. View the schedule for more information
- Spaces in these Skill Sessions are limited. Please only register for the session/s that you are able to attend.

- If a session is full and you would to attend, please make a note of the session details. Walk-ins on the day will be allowed if space is available.

Week 2 |
Key Dates and Uni Jargon |
Learn what you need to know about important university deadlines and common academic terms. We'll break down key dates like enrolment deadlines, exam periods, and assignment due dates, as well as explain essential university jargon to help you navigate your academic journey with ease. |
Week 3 |
Australian Tax Essentials |
Build essential Australian tax skills through practical, hands-on activities led by the UOW Tax Clinic, with a focus on using myGov services and understanding how to lodge an Individual Tax Return. Through interactive demonstrations and guided activities, participants will gain practical tax knowledge, build confidence, and be better prepared to manage their future tax obligations independently. |

Basics of Budgeting |
Learn the fundamentals of managing your finances, using the information to develop your own personal budget. |
Week 5 |
Visa Options for International Students |
This session will give an overview of immigration law and procedure relevant to university students, particularly around visa options for international students following the completion of their studies. |
Week 6 |
Think Big. Start Small: The value of working for SMEs |
Thinking about your career after graduation? Join our expert panel working in local small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) to hear how they built their careers, navigated challenges, and found opportunities. Gain practical tips, career inspiration, and ask your questions during the live Q&A. |
Week 7 |
Work and Money: Understanding your rights and obligations |
Understand the financial implications of your job. Learn how to read a payslip, your superannuation rights, taxation obligations, types of employment and how that can influence your financial situation. |
Week 8 |
Success Strategies for the Second Half of Semester |
Everything you need to nail the second half of Autumn semester. Learn how to use academic feedback, how to consolidate your notes, and how to manage yourself and your studies in the lead up to final assignments and EXAMS! |
Week 9 |
Understanding Credit and Debt |
Learn how debt works and the different types of credits that can be provided. Understand how to assess if obtaining credit is right for your circumstances and strategies to avoid getting into debt traps. |
Week 10 |
Mindfulness: Putting it Into Action |
In this workshop you will participate in practical mindfulness skills, helping you increase awareness, reduce stress, and develop calm, focused habits for everyday wellbeing. |
Week 11 |
Summer Jobs Bootcamp |
Join our Summer Jobs Bootcamp and get job-search ready! Learn where to find casual opportunities, create a resume that stands out, and pick up practical interview tips to help you land the job with confidence. Important Note: This session is delivered in collaboration with UOW Careers & Employability. Registrations for this session will be available through CareerHub. |
Week 12 |
"Sex, drugs, and rock and roll": Laws and Police Powers |
This session will discuss what you need to know about laws on sex, dating and relationships. It will cover topics including consent, "Sexting" and image based abuse. The session will also include information on policing at music festivales including police powers and drug searches at festivals. |
Week 13 |
Mindfulness: Putting it Into Action (Final Assessments & Exams) |
In this workshop you will participate in practical mindfulness skills, helping you increase awareness, reduce stress, and develop calm, focused habits to prepare for final assessments and exams. |
