Your Business and Law Summer Orientation is a 3-day program to help you get settled into your new environment, support you in succeeding at uni and make your time here the best it can be.

From enrolment support, discovering key resources and opportunities, exploring your new space or creating fun times and new friendships – we’ve got you covered!

Your Business and Law Summer Orientation 2024 Program

Your 3-day Business and Law Summer Orientation program will be delivered from Wednesday, 27 November to Friday, 29 November.

Date: Wednesday, 27 November, 2024       Time: 9.30 am - 4.30 pm       Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

Day 1 is your official welcome to the University of Wollongong where you will:

  • Immerse Yourself in Culture: Experience a traditional Aboriginal Ceremony and Welcome to Country.
  • Build Your Network: Meet and connect with key staff members from the Faculty of Business and Law.
  • Get Insider Tips: Learn essential information and top tips for your first weeks in Australia (for international students).
  • Gain Student Insights: Hear from Senior UOW students as they guide you through UOW systems and communications.
  • Get Ready: Collect your student card and get support for any enrolment questions.

Free lunch provided – please provide your dietary requirements and any allergies in the registration form.

This tailored orientation has been designed over 3 days, with attendance at each day strongly encouraged to help you succeed.

Date: Thursday, 28 November, 2024          Time: 10 am - 5.30 pm       Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

Day 2 is all about support and exploring your new space!

  • Network with Support Services: Meet the UOW team dedicated to helping you succeed.
  • Enjoy a Tasty Lunch: Refuel with delicious food and great company.
  • Beach Safety Session: Learn essential tips to safely enjoy the beautiful local coastline followed by a guided trip to North Wollongong Beach.
  • Explore Wollongong: Discover local shops and vibrant food markets with a guided tour from local experts.

Date: Friday, 29 November, 2024          Time: 9.30 am - 4 pm       Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

Day 3 will help you hit your study targets and equip you with the knowledge and skills to succeed in your studies!

  • Ready, Set, Succeed Program: Boost your academic writing, reading, and speaking skills.
  • Fun-Filled Lunch: Connect UOW Pulse, the heart of your UOW experience.
  • Academic Skills Adventure: Complete challenges, collect prizes, practice key skills, and connect with UOW’s Learning and Maths Skills support teams.
  • Wrap-Up Celebration: End the day with a celebration hosted by the Faculty of Business and Law.

Academic Skills Support

This workshop is included within Day 3 (Friday, 29 November, 2024) of your Business and Law Summer Orientation 2024 Program.

Kickstart your academic journey with essential information and practical activities.

  • Research and Referencing Tips: Learn the specific research and referencing requirements of Australian universities. Gain techniques and practical skills to access quality research materials for your UOW assignments. 
  • Assessment Types: Understand the common assessment types at UOW and how to complete them to meet university requirements.
  • Academic Reading, Writing, and Speaking Skills: Develop your formal academic English. Practice academic language skills that will be essential for your assignments.

This program is included within Day 3 (Friday, 29 November, 2024) of your Business and Law Summer Orientation 2024 Program.

Embark on a quest for success!

This fun, engaging program includes a variety of activities where you will complete challenges, collect prizes, practice key skills, and connect with UOW’s academic support team. 

The Interactive Activities will: 

  • Introduce you to UOW systems and communication platforms: Ensure you are ready to function smoothly from the start of your studies, allowing you to focus on course content and assignments without worrying about administrative processes.
  • Help you understand UOW culture & expectations: Gain insights into the academic culture and expectations at UOW to help you succeed in your studies.
  • Highlight the support services available at UOW: Discover the wide range of support services available to international students. 
  • Let you practice and consolidate academic skills: Apply the academic skills learned earlier in the day to consolidate your knowledge. 

These subject specific workshops sit outside of your 3-day Business and Law Summer Orientation 2024 Program.

If you have enrolled in any of the identified subjects (BUS121, FIN111, FIN22), please add the workshop to your schedule within the registration process.

  • Subject: FIN222 – Corporate Finance
    Workshop: Algebra (including log laws) for finance
    Date: Wednesday, 4 December, 2024
    Time: 8.30am – 10.00 am
    Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

    This workshop offers participants an overview or refresher of basic algebra and logarithmic laws. Students will actively engage in learning how to collect like terms, simplify algebraic expressions, rearrange equations, and apply logarithmic laws. The workshop covers content relevant to FIN222, including manipulating the compound interest formula to solve for unknown variables.

  • Subject: FIN111 – Introductory Principles of Finance
    Workshop: Basic financial mathematics in MS Excel
    Date: Thursday, 5 December, 2024
    Time: 8.30am – 10.00 am
    Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

    This workshop is part of the Math Skills workshop series on Microsoft Excel and introduces beginner users with a background in financial mathematics to the applicable built-in functions. Students will solve problems related to reducible balance loans using brute force techniques and then validate their results using a more refined approach based upon the advanced features offered by MS Excel.

     
  • Subject: BUS121 – Statistics for Business
    Workshop: Hypothesis testing in MS Excel
    Date: Friday, 6 December, 2024
    Time: 8.30 am – 10.00 am
    Location: UOW Wollongong Campus

    This workshop is part of the Math Skills workshop series on Microsoft Excel. It introduces beginner users to performing inferential data analysis in MS Excel using the built-in Data ToolPak. Students will learn how to access and utilise the Data Toolpak to perform some basic hypothesis testing, i.e. z-test, t-test etc
