Get started at UOW with the skills to succeed
Skill Sessions help you build the essential skills and knowledge to feel confident starting at university. Each week focuses on practical topics you can use immediately in you studies and student life.
What to expect:
- Expert-Led Weekly Sessions: Engage directly with UOW staff and key support teams who provide guidance and practical insights.
- Practical Skills for Academic Success: Develop effective study strategies, time management techniques, and a clear understanding of academic expectations.
- Guideance for Living and Studying in Australia: Receive structured advice designed to support your transition to university life and the broader Australian context.

Skill Sessions run weekly throughout session (not including mid-session recess, study recess, or exam weeks).

Key Dates and Uni Jargon |
Learn what you need to know about important university deadlines and common academic terms. We'll break down key dates like enrolment deadlines, exam periods, and assignment due dates, as well as explain essential university jargon to help you navigate your academic journey with ease. |
Week 3 |
Build Your Professional Network & Find Graduate Opportunities |
Want to improve your career prospects? Join the Careers and Employability team to learn how networking can help you discover graduate opportunities. You’ll pick up practical tips to grow your professional network both online and in person, learn how to make a great impression with employers and mentors, and hear about ways to find graduate roles. We’ll also share information about the upcoming Big Meet Careers Fair and how you can make the most of it. |
Week 4 |
Basics of Budgeting |
Learn the fundamentals of managing your finances, using the information to develop your own personal budget. |
Week 5 |
Mindfulness: Putting it Into Action |
In this workshop you will participate in practical mindfulness skills, helping you increase awareness, reduce stress, and develop calm, focused habits for everyday wellbeing. |
Week 6 |
Understanding Credit and Debt |
Learn how debt works and the different types of credits that can be provided. Understand how to assess if obtaining credit is right for your circumstances and strategies to avoid getting into debt traps. |
Week 7 |
Tenants’ Rights |
This session will outline the legal rights of tenants renting in the private rental market, including regarding repairs, rent increases, share houses, and evictions. |
Week 8 |
Work and Money: Understanding your rights and obligations |
Understand the financial implications of your job. Learn how to read a payslip, your superannuation rights, taxation obligations, types of employment and how that can influences your financial situation. |
Week 9 |
Success Strategies for the Second Half of Semester |
Everything you need to nail the second half of Autumn semester. Learn how to use academic feedback, how to consolidate your notes, and how to manage yourself and your studies in the lead up to final assignments and EXAMS! |
Week 10 |
Mindfulness: Putting it Into Action |

Week 11 |
Local Travel Guides |
As Autumn session picks up, take a break with our Local Travel Guides. Join us to uncover top destinations to visit over the post-exam study break, learn practical travel tips from fellow students, and share your own favourite spots from across the globe. |
Week 12 |

Week 13 |
Workers’ Rights |
This session will explain the general legal rights every worker in Australia has in their job, including about the differences between permanent and casual work, the law about whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor, laws about dismissal, bullying and discrimination, and entitlements like minimum wage, leave and superannuation. |
