Trimester 3, 2026 International Student Orientation and Welcome 

Sydney Business School, University of Wollongong warmly welcomes all newly commencing international students to the International Student Orientation and Welcome Sessions.

These sessions will provide essential information about the facilities, services and support available at your campus, while helping you learn more about your course and what to expect as you begin your studies.

You'll also have the opportunity to meet your fellow students and connect with University academics and professional staff who will support you throughout your journey at UOW.

As an important part of your Orientation program, your Orientation continues with the 'Ready, Set, Succeed: Academic Writing, Reading and Speaking for University'  on campus workshop, where you'll develop the academic skills needed to succeed at UOW. Learn about Australian university expectations for research, referencing and assessments, while building the academic reading, writing and communication skills you'll use throughout your studies. All commencing international students are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop to support a successful transition to university study and prepare for their first assessments.

Academic Success Workshops

These workshops are designed to help you prepare for academic success from your first trimester at UOW.

Ready, Set, Succeed includes many practical activities and ready-to-use information that will:

  • Introduce students to UOW systems and communication platforms (Moodle, SOLS, UOWmail).

    Understanding these systems before classes begin will help you access course materials, receive important communications and stay on top of university requirements from your first week of study.
     

  • Develop research and referencing skills.
    Universities in Australia have specific research and referencing requirements that may differ from what you are used to. This workshop will introduce you to the tools, techniques and resources you'll need to locate quality academic sources and reference them correctly in your assessments.
     
  • Understand common assessment types and structure.
    UOW expects students to write, present and structure assignments in specific ways. This workshop will help you understand these expectations and prepare you to complete assignments successfully throughout your degree, so that you do not lose precious marks when submitting your work.
     
  • Build academic reading, writing, and speaking skills.
    Central to this program is the aim to develop commencing students' formal academic English.

    Through practical activities and examples, you'll develop the academic communication skills expected in classes and assessments at UOW.
     

  • Learn about the support services available to you. UOW offers a wide range of academic, wellbeing and student support services. You'll be introduced to these services and learn how to access support early if you need assistance during your studies.

All commencing international students are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop as part of their Orientation program. The skills and knowledge covered in Ready, Set, Succeed are designed to prepare you for your first classes, assessments and academic life at UOW.

Session/Time:

  1. Introduction to Excel (9.30 am - 11 am)

    This workshop in the Excel seminar series introduces beginner users to MS Excel. You will learn how to input data, perform basic operations and use basic inbuilt functions. Working through the example of a casual worker tracking weekly and annual income, calculating taxation, determining tax debt/refund and tracking living expenses, you will also learn some basic visualisation techniques.
     

  2. Basic Data Analysis in Excel (11.30 am - 1 pm)

    This workshop in the Excel seminar series will explore how MS Excel can be used to collect, organise, visualise and analyse data. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to use MS Excel to calculate measures of central tendency and dispersion, and identify outliers. You will learn how to create box-and-whisker plots as a means of visualising and characterising the spread of a data set. This workshop will provide practical skills for analysing and evaluating data.

The content delivered in these workshops will be particularly relevant for students studying:

  • Master of Business Analytics
  • Master of Financial Management
  • Master of Marketing
  • Master of Professional Accounting

These workshops are strongly recommended for commencing students and will help you develop key skills that support success in your studies at Sydney Business School, University of Wollongong.
